Roll on roll off freight and shipping
Why choose LeShuttle Freight for your roll on roll off shipping?
Freight carriers rely on the speed, reliability, safety and sustainability of LeShuttle Freight. Our specialised RoRo freight service ensures that vehicles board and are on their way quickly from the arrival terminal. Crossing times are just 35 minutes between our Folkestone and Calais terminals (ferry freight from Dover takes at least 90 minutes), and loading times are faster too. LeShuttle Freight offers up to six departures per hour, operating 365 days a year.
While some ferries operate a RoPax service (combining passengers and freight), LeShuttle Freight offers a dedicated freight service.
How does LeShuttle Freight handle RoRo freight?
It’s so simple. Instead of driving onto a ferry, trucks drive onto one of our rail transport shuttles, and drive off again after the crossing. The loading and unloading process is much quicker than a roll on roll off ferry freight service.
LeShuttle Freight provides the service flexibility customers are looking for. If you have a freight account with us, you don’t even need to book a departure slot. Just make sure your company’s fleet details are up to date. When your driver arrives at our Folkestone or Calais terminals our systems will recognise their registration plate, and after border controls, security and check-in we will direct them onto our first available shuttle.
FIRST account holders also benefit from priority boarding for their drivers.
What happens during the crossing?
After parking up in the shuttle, drivers leave their vehicle and travel in an air-conditioned ‘Club Car’ where they can relax during the crossing. The time drivers spend in the Club Car counts as a mandatory break in their tachograph, so they can be on their way as soon as they exit our terminal after the crossing.
Frequently asked questions
What types of vehicles can you accommodate for roll on roll off shipping?
LeShuttle Freight can accommodate up to 44 tonne full-size articulated trucks for RoRo shipping. We regularly transport specialised vehicles including temperature-controlled units and vehicles carrying hazardous goods (with appropriate documentation). For unusual loads or specialised transport requirements, please contact our Freight Commercial teams.
I have a van. Do I use the LeShuttle Freight service?
No. Commercial vans up to 3.5 tonnes in weight, 2.55m wide and 3.60m high travel on our LeShuttle passenger service. Apply for a VanPro account with our Freight Commercial team and book your crossings in advance. When your driver arrives at our terminal, they should follow the Passenger terminal directions and the dedicated ‘VanPro’ route. VanPro account holders can also upgrade to VanPro Flexi, giving your drivers more flexible bookings and priority boarding on the next available departure.
How does LeShuttle Freight contribute to more sustainable roll on roll off shipping?
LeShuttle Freight significantly reduces the environmental impact of cross-Channel RoRo freight transport. With LeShuttle as part of your freight solution, you're making an environmentally responsible choice. Carbon emissions for trucks on our shuttles are 14 times lower than ferry alternatives per crossing. Folkestone is also closer to London than Dover, saving 25km of driving each way.
